Comment moderation: On
Being someone who believes in freedom of speech, I let people say what they want even if I don't agree with their points of view. That is the reason why I never put on comment moderation for Human Nature.
Until now.
A couple of weeks ago, I received a lovely (now edited for content) comment that I thought I'd share with my eight readers. Not only did it make me wince (meaning it made its point), but it made me feel ill; not only for myself since it was directed towards me, but to the hatred and discrimination that exists in society.
To prove my point...
Die you disgusting **** ****. I found your blog by accident thinking it would be about human nature.... but it's about a mentally ill **** whose life is a crime against nature. You **** **** **** **** ****... you make me sick, and billions of people around the world agree with me. I hope you get **** **** **** **** **** ****.
You're nothing but a **** **** **** ****. What's the matter? raised by a single mom and ended up with **** **** **** ****? you **** **** **** I hope someone **** **** **** **** **** **** **** ****.
Go to **** or **** **** you need restorative therapy to correct the damage that obviously occurred to you in childhood **** ****.
If an asteroid came to wipe out man and there was five days of this earth left... I'd **** **** **** **** ****.
You're a criime against nature... and a disgrace to your ancestors. Die.
Of course, this person was anonymous.
So, because of that lovely sentiment from an unknown person, I'm going to moderate my comments. Sadly. I thought people would've moved beyond such hatred and ignorance.
Until now.

I've had comment moderation for some time now after someone left a link to a website that had a virus. I had to delete the entire post to get rid of the comment. Then it was moderation time. I've never received a comment like yours but would have rejected it outright. A respectible person wouldn't have left such a comment nor signed him/herself anonymous. So what took you so long to take advantage of the moderation option??? - Volker
Unfortunately no. Bigotry is alive and well.
You're going to change your way of doing things because of an anonymous commenter? Then he (gotta be he right?) has won. That comment says much more about him than you. Still, I know it feels shi$$y when it happens. Really, I know.
I'm sorry this happened to you. Even anonymous words hurt.
Will comment moderation keep you from seeing such messages? You'd still have to read and delete them just as you would in normal circumstances. It would just keep your readers from seeing them before you get a chance to delete them and we already know these people are losers.
Moderation just adds a layer of complexity to your readers.
I also run a blog for a GLBT PAC out in California. After I started getting comments about the Bible on the No on Prop 8 posts, I turned comments off for those posts.
I totally agree with you, even thou I hate filling out those word verifications.
Human Nature comes in all forms and sizes, not only the bleep bleep bleepform or the bleep f*cking bleep size.
Phew, thank god that wasn't one of my drunk comments.
Seriously, there will always be people of narrow mind, of anger, of such self loathing that they feel the need to project onto others. And from what that commenter said, and by making the comment anonymous, it is clear that person also lacks courage.
and, i'd say you do a pretty good job at blogging about human nature... well, at least your perspective of it.
keep blogging.
wow. That was an intense comment. I love your blog, it makes me stop and laugh at the vanity of it all.
What a sick fucking crybaby. And a coward too. This POS would never have the balls to say that to your face. Talk about a closet case.
You can always just delete the comments. It's more frustrating for them to see that it was deleted. And more fun for you.
I can't believe how much you had to edit out. This person is mentally unstable. And probably ugly as a manhole cover.
Come to my blog, anonymous. I'll kick your ass, because I'm in the mood for a good fight. I'm not afraid of you, but it seems like you have a lot to fear.
That was pretty disgusting, and I don't blame you for excercising some pollution control. Why should your page be polluted by that sort of sickness.
I have been reading your page for about a month. Good stuff.
Oh, there's nothing in "moderation" about that comment. Sorry you had to see that. Ugh.
If an asteroid came to wipe out man and there was five days of this earth left... I'd **** **** **** **** ****.
C'mon, Steven, spill the beans. Is this one "have sex with my dog"?
I've had comment moderation on since the beginning. It's my blog, and I decide what goes on it, basically. Having said that, in 2.5 years I've only ever rejected 3 comments.
I do think, however, that word verification AND comment moderation is a bit much... ;-)
I'll take comment moderation off eventually. Now, it's not bloody likely.
free speech is sadly, sometimes, taken too lightly. I believe in your right to your beliefs as long as they do not impinge on mine.
Wow, unf*ckin'believable!! Some people would actually take their sweet time and write all this out. I feel bad for the person really. Misunderstood. Misinformed. Misguided. Try not to let this get to you, but sometimes it's very difficult.
Take care Luff. Water off a duck's back.
i got one too but it was nothing like yours. yikes.
he'll be getting his in a prison one day somewhere.
I'm a pretty new fan of yours and its YOUR blog, you can decide to do whatever you want with it. I'm in Toronto as well and love the insight you provide into human nature, I can relate in so many ways. Keep up the great work, ignore that SOB!
there will be always narrow minded ppl who fear change and do react this way but u cant let the barking dogs change ur route to ur destination can u? great way to keep them moderated theres no point havin such mindless things being commented on ur blog after all it is ur territory
